2010 Meeting Minutes

Safety Meeting Minutes - October 13, 2010

The meeting was called to order by chair, Edward Sala. Previous minutes were read and approved.

New Safety Committee Member
Michael McKeirnan was elected by Mailing Services to the Safety Committee to replace Kay Dutton who has retired.

Incidents
There were two incidents since the last meeting.
The first one involved an employee who was preparing to leave work and noticed an outlet that was hanging from the wall that still had machines plugged into it. She tried to unplug the machines and received a shock. Later she learned that a serviceman had accidentally pulled the socket from the wall and was returning to fix it.

The committee recommended that when an employee finds an unsafe issue, they should tell their supervisor first before they try to resolve the problem.

The second incident happened when a pallet that was leaning up against the wall was bumped and fell on a second employee’s leg. The pallet had been brought to the area and leaned on the wall as it would soon be used to place boxes on.

The committee recommended that it would be best to wait until the immediate use of a pallet before it is brought to the area. They also recommend that pallets not be leaned against the wall.

Mary has requested that the Safety Committee write a step by step guide for individuals to follow when an incident occurs. Arline and Ed will write a draft and bring it to the next meeting for approval.

Stress Seminar
Scott Case, Ph.D., Coordinator of Employee Assistance Program and the Stress Management Program will come to UP on November 19, 1:30-3:00 to present a Stress Management Seminar. All UP employees are encouraged to attend.

AED Purchase
The AED is here and after consulting with Randy Bennett from the Fire Department, it will be mounted in the foyer where it is most available for use, including the public who might need it. Randy suggested that we have Dave Grimes from UREC come to UP and give us basic training in the directions, care, and use of the new AED. This would not be a replacement for the AED training at UREC.

First Aid/CPR/AED Training
Joy Rich, Leslie Little, and Ken Sundvik will take Standard First Aid, with Adult CPR/AED class on Monday, October 25. Hans Abbott, Jeff Hanson, Walter Wyatt, and Alvin Yuen will take the CPR/AED review class on Nov. 9.

It was suggest in the meeting that Supervisors are required to be first aid trained. Arline will find out the requirements for Supervisors vs. first aid training and she and Ed will put this item on the agenda for the next Management meeting.

Meeting with another Safety Committee
UP will meet with the Vet Med Safety Committee in near future. The date is being determined.

WSU Safety Committee minutes
We have not received any new WSU Safety Committee minutes since our last meeting.

Eye Wash
The eye wash in the Prepress area is not functioning due to physical changes in the area. It was recommended that the eye wash be moved and mounted on the sink that is near the digital press.

Safety Inspection
It is time for the annual Safety Inspection. The committee will invite the Manager’s to help with the inspection again this year. An area of the inspection checklist will assigned each manager. They will be assisted by a Safety Committee member. Ed and Arline will make the assignments and will plan to have everyone inspect in a different area this year than they did before.

The committee is on target with the stated goals.

The next meeting will be on November 30.
