The meeting was called to order by the chair, Ed Sala. Previous minutes were read and approved after noting the correct spelling of Chris Tapfer’s name.
There were two accident reports. Both accidents involved slipping on ice. The committee recommended that we all be aware of the conditions underfoot. We could purchase "Yak Tracks" that slip onto the bottom of our shoes. These are available in some area stores, including Tri-State.

Kay Dutton – Mailing Services; Patty Elben – Prepress, Pressroom, Document Center; Ed Sala – Offices; Nancy Flodin – Bindery; Hans Abbott – Cougar Copies/Libraries; Arline Lyons – Administrative Appointee.

Birds on the Dock: Arline spoke with Ed Havey at EHS regarding the problems with birds on the dock. Ed passed the information on to Gene Patterson who contacted Brad Bowman with Palouse Empire Pest Control. Brad came and looked at the bird situation on the dock. He said he would recommend to EHS that Facilities Operations extend the netting to the ends of the rafters and put netting wherever the birds were able to roost/sit/nest.
Chemicals in the Drain: Arline spoke with Ed Havey about sulfuric acid being poured into the drain at UP. Ed volunteered to talk with Pat Cruver about the incident with the suggestion that follow-up training be given to those who work with drains.
Water, mud, and ice running on the Red parking
lot: Ed Havey was contacted and he will look into the problem and
initiate proper corrections to the problem.
Winter Driving Quiz: A winter driving quiz was circulated to all of
the UP employees. It was well received – over thirty

great conversation starter.

bulletin board here at UP.
First Aid Kits: The first-aid kits have all been updated recently. However, if you notice something in your kit that is running low, please mention it to your safety representative.

June 19: The University Publishing Safety Committee met in the Cooper Publications Building on June 19, 2008.
In attendance: Hans Abbott, Kay Dutton, Patty Elben, Nancy Flodin, Arline Lyons, Ed Sala.
The meeting was called to order by chair, Ed Sala. Previous minutes were read and approved.
There were two accident reports. An employee cut his ear on the corner of an overhead light while moving around on the offset press machine. The committee members walked to the area to see how this happened. The employee informed the committee that he is going to place a small piece of split rubber hose over all four corners of the light so this accident can not be repeated.
The second accident involved an A/P employee who cut his finger with an exacto knife. The committee recommends that employees using exacto knives slow down, even on rush jobs, and make controlled, shorter cuts.
The committee also recommends that for safety reasons, exempt staff always let the supervisor know when they will be working late.
Birds on the Dock - Ed Havey turned this issue over to Gene Patterson at EHS. Gene sent Brad Bowen, a pest control expert, to the dock to look at the situation. Mr. Bowen reported that what Facility Operations had done the first time was a good start but he believed they should return to finish the job by putting up more netting, etc. Gene contacted Facility Operations and requested MCS money. This project will have to wait until at least next year as this year’s MSC money has been spent. Meanwhile, we will try to scare the birds with old cds and possibly mylar streamers.

answers can be found on the Safety bulletin board.

area. A list of supplies that the various sized kits should
contain was distributed.
Safety Committee Goals for 2008
The 2008 goals were assessed to see if they will all be
completed. We have accomplished most of them and will more
than likely meet all of our stated goals.
Garbage can by the dock
The garbage can by the dock next to the big door is full and has
not been being emptied regularly since the retirement of one of our
workers. Arline will bring this to Steve Rigby’s
attention so he can ascertain whose responsibility it will be to
empty this can. It may be necessary to place signage by this
can indicating where the various recycling containers are as
currently there is quite a bit of cardboard in and around the
can.
Shoe Mobile
An employee was inquiring about the Shoe Mobile that comes to the
University where protective shoes can be obtained. He wanted to
know how the program works. Arline will find the information
for him.
The next meeting of the Safety Committee is proposed for November 20, 3:00 p.m. Arline will provide treats.

Shoe Mobile
The Mobile Shoe Service is provided by Central Stores and comes to
campus quarterly. Information regarding Safety-Toe Equipment
can be found in the Safety Policies and Procedures Manual,
S30.50.1. Warehouse workers do come under the occupations
that departments should consider safety-toe footwear. The
amount of funding is at the discretion of the unit chair or
director. Our department is willing to purchase these shoes
when necessary if they are worn while working and left at UP
overnight. If the employee takes them home, the employee will
pay one-half of the cost.
Garbage can by the dock
The garbage can by the dock needs to be emptied regularly as papers
and trash blow out if it gets very full. Nancy Flodin will
check this can regularly, emptying when necessary. She will
get assistance if it is too full.
New Business
Don’t become a “Slip tistic”
As the weather becomes colder, please remember that slippery
conditions will exist and that we need to be extra careful not only
when driving to and from work but also when walking to and from our
cars and other buildings. If you encounter ice covered
stairways or walkways anywhere on campus, please contact your area
safety representative.

The non-skid strips on the dock need to be replaced. Facility
Operations will be notified.
Parking Lines
The Parking lines around the Mail trucks need repainted.
Facility Operations will be notified.
Air Conditioning
Installation of the chiller in the Pressroom should begin in
April. As time gets closer Facility Operations personnel will
meet with Denise and Steve to discuss scheduling and specific
details of the project. The chiller should be running before
it gets hot next summer.
