University Publishing Recognized for Excellence in Management and Sustainability
The Washington State University Office of University Publishing has received the 2009 IPMA Management Award from the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA). University Publishing was also recognized by Unisource Worldwide Inc. for its dedication to forest sustainability and was named a “respect™” printer.
IPMA is a national organization for in-house publishing professionals with members from public and private universities as well as Fortune 500 companies. The Management Award recognizes an outstanding in-house publishing unit for its team effort to support services for the larger organization. The judges examine equipment inventory and acquisition, budget, productivity, employee relations, safety, new technology, and promotion.
University Publishing based its submission on the
adoption of new technology, its recent Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody
certification, continued and expanded web development
services, client education (including seminars on
mailing and the effective use of electronic
communication), advisory board activities, and safety
initiatives. The Management Award is unique because it
recognizes the efforts of the entire staff of
University Publishing.
Unisource Worldwide Inc. supplies printing units with
paper and equipment. Their “respect™”
program recognizes printing plants that are committed
to sustainability. To be recognized as a respect™
printer, the unit must have FSC certification, use
renewable energy or manufacturing processes that
safeguard resources, and use recycled-content paper
that meets EPA guidelines.

Staff Recognized for Excellence
in Printing
The Washington State University Office of University Publishing has received three national awards for excellence in printing quality from the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA). IPMA is a national organization for in-house publishing professionals with members from public and private universities, as well as Fortune 500 companies.
University Publishing received a silver award for a WSU “Feast of the Arts” menu, and bronze awards for “The Innovators” program and LandEscapes, a student-published literary magazine based in the Department of English. Beginning with this publication, LandEscapes is now published twice each year. The fall 2007 edition won the bronze award from IPMA. “Feast of the Arts” is a popular dinner series held Friday nights before home football games in Pullman. “The Innovators” is a lecture series in Seattle and Spokane that is designed to preview the future by featuring the cutting-edge research of WSU faculty members. The series promotes informed discussion about issues of importance to Washington’s citizens, including economic, scientific, social, and political topics. The printing for all three award winning entries was done on the university’s recently acquired full color digital press.

Steve Rigby, Director of Printing Services, will receive the awards on behalf of the staff at the IPMA annual conference in June. Rigby will also present a seminar on acquiring Forest Stewardship Council certification at the conference.

WSU is First in the Nation to Receive Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council
Washington State University’s printing facility has been awarded chain-of-custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, furthering the University’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. WSU is the first university in the nation to receive this certification. The Forest Stewardship Council is a nonprofit organization that encourages responsible management of the world’s forests and the products derived from those forests. The chain-of-custody certification provides assurance to consumers that the products they buy, marked with the FSC trademark, originated in forests that meet the FSC’s principles and criteria (including legal issues, indigenous and labor rights, and environmental impacts). FSC certification is growing world-wide.
Receiving this certification is one of several best practices University Publishing follows to ensure that the University’s printed pieces are produced in a responsible way. Other green practices include the use of soy-based inks, recycled papers, and solvents that are better for the environment and human health, and a robust waste management program.
“We’re the biggest user of paper products on campus,” explains Steve Rigby, director of printing, “so we feel it is important to strengthen our commitment to sustainable practices by seeking this certification. We will include the FSC trademark on printed pieces to demonstrate the University’s commitment to sustainability and responsible use of forest products.”

Award of Excellence!
The University Publishing Safety Committee received an Award of Excellence at the Environmental Health & Safety Annual Conference October 4th in Pullman. The award is for "outstanding performance in making WSU a safer, healthier campus" and represents the highest level of accomplishment. Arline Lyons and Ed Sala accepted the award on behalf of the department. Congratulations!
